Troy Aikman is weighing his next move in broadcasting after a period of uncertainty surrounding his role with ESPN.
Aikman recently spoke with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones before a Monday Night Football game in Philadelphia. During that conversation, Aikman expressed interest in potentially rejoining the Dallas organization in an executive capacity. He noted that his broadcasting future is currently in flux.
Aikman told the radio show The Musers on The Ticket in Dallas that he felt he had placed Jones in an unfair position. The former quarterback explained that he was simply answering a question, which then forced Jones to respond to speculation about hiring him. Aikman said there is no perfect answer for the owner to give in that situation.
The two men discussed the matter briefly before the Eagles and Cowboys played in Philadelphia. Aikman called the game alongside Joe Buck for ESPN. He stated that he brought up the topic because he felt he had backed Jones into a corner that the owner did not ask to be in. Aikman said Jones understood the situation and was complimentary about a potential future role, though the two agreed they are not having those conversations right now.
This discussion comes after reports of a dispute between Aikman and Buck. The two have worked together for 25 years, making them the longest-running booth in NFL history. ESPN has reportedly shown little interest in extending Aikman's contract after giving Buck a large extension.
Jones spoke on 105.3 The Fan this week about the possibility of working with Aikman again. He said the team is not doing anything more direct with Aikman at this time. However, he added that it is very possible and that fans should not rule out a reunion.
