For players on the Carle Place field hockey roster, a championship has become a routine part of the fall schedule. The team added its 14th consecutive Nassau Class C title on Friday when it defeated No. 3 Cold Spring Harbor by a score of 4-0.
The game took place at Seaford High School. The Frogs, the top seed in the bracket, entered the contest with an 8-6 record. Cold Spring Harbor finished the season with a 1-13 mark.
Freshman Madison Pellegrino broke the scoreless tie just over three minutes into the second quarter. She scored on a strong push from the right side of the field. The goal started a run that the opposing team could not stop.
Emi Coronel contributed two goals in the second half. Her first was a diving reverse sweep in the second quarter, assisted by Pellegrino. Her second came in the third quarter as a shot from the top of the circle. Erin Morgan added the final goal in the fourth quarter.
Coach Elissa Frein said the team’s work ethic keeps the program competitive year after year. She noted that the players are highly coachable and that the team improves every season. “Every year is just as important as the year before,” Frein said. “It means so much to us.”
Coronel, a four-year starter, said the legacy of the program motivates her and her teammates to push harder in practice and games. The team will play Bayport-Blue Point in the Long Island Class C championship at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Adelphi.
