Giuliana Guerriero scored two goals on Friday to help Massapequa field hockey secure its sixth consecutive Nassau Class A championship. The top-seeded team defeated No. 2 Port Washington 4-1 at Cold Spring Harbor High School, extending a streak of county titles that has lasted for six seasons.
Guerriero put the Knights ahead early in the first quarter. She tipped in a deflection from Kaitlyn Terranova following a penalty corner. Massapequa increased its lead with 4:19 remaining in the first half. Terranova collected a rebound off the right post and struck the ball back into the cage to make it 2-0 at the break.
Port Washington, which finished the season with an 8-8-1 record, did not score until the third quarter. Lexi Raskin found the net on a penalty corner. The Vikings dominated possession in the corner kick zone, earning 15 penalty corners compared to Massapequa’s seven. Goalkeeper Brooke Donnellan and the defensive line stopped the Port Washington attackers during those opportunities.
The Knights added two more goals in the third quarter to finish the scoring. Guerriero found the net again, and Delaney Diesso scored on a reverse sweep. The Massapequa defense settled into its rhythm during the fourth quarter to hold the 4-1 lead until the final whistle.
Guerriero noted that the victory felt distinct because it was her first year on the roster. She said the team knew Port Washington wanted the win, but Massapequa wanted it more. Donnellan, a senior, described finishing the season with a sixth straight title as meaningful. She added that the team still has work to do and expressed excitement about the talent from the goalies to the offense.
Coach Morgan Ortega said the six-county-title streak reflects the winning culture the program has built over the years. She described the team as a family that loves coming together to play. Ortega said many players want to continue the tradition they have established. The team is scheduled to play Northport in the Long Island Class A championship on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Adelphi.
Massapequa finished the regular season with an 11-5 record. The Knights will attempt to capture their first Long Island title since 2006 in the upcoming subregional contest.
