Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. The 20-year-old Italian driver claimed his ninth victory of the season. His win increased his point advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell to 123. Five races remain on the calendar.

Antonelli started from pole position at the Circuit of the Americas. He finished the 56-lap race in 1 hour, 35 minutes, and 16.650 seconds. Charles Leclerc of Monaco finished second, 13.078 seconds behind the winner. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing completed the podium, arriving 17.485 seconds after Antonelli.

Strategy determined the race outcome. Most teams used a two-stop plan. Antonelli stayed out until lap 25. He made one pit stop and did not return to the garage. "It was a perfect way to end the weekend; it was an incredible team effort, especially from strategy to believe in me and go for one stop," Antonelli said.

George Russell must win the next race in Mexico City to remain in contention. If he fails to do so, Antonelli will secure the title. Russell currently trails by 123 points. Antonelli has dominated the sport in his second Formula One season.

Max Verstappen is now mathematically out of the title fight. The four-time champion will go two years without a world championship after winning every title from 2021 to 2024. "Our overall pace was not good enough, and the tyres we had available were not the right ones," Verstappen said. He attributed his podium finish partly to luck, citing a Virtual Safety Car at the end of the race.

The Virtual Safety Car appeared on lap 52 when Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopped on the track. It stayed in effect until the penultimate lap. By then, no driver could catch Antonelli.

Mercedes extended its lead in the constructors' standings to 133 points over Ferrari. Mercedes holds 607 points, while Ferrari has 474. Antonelli has won both United States races this year, including the upcoming Las Vegas event in November. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff called it the best race Antonelli has produced. "Getting off the start with the inferior tyre and then controlling it at all times. The race of a champion who isn't the champion yet, but exceptional," Wolff said.
