Jackson Chourio collected four hits in a 10-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. The performance accounted for a quarter of the Milwaukee Brewers' 16 total hits in the game. Chourio, 22, has now played 23 postseason games in just three years.
The win puts the Brewers ahead 3-0 in the World Series. They sit on the brink of their first championship in 57 years. Chourio became the first 22-year-old player in 80 years to record four hits in a World Series game.
He started the fifth inning rally with a base hit up the middle. He finished it with a double into the right-center field gap. The Brewers had already blown out Tampa Bay in previous games. They blitzed pitcher Nick Martinez in the first inning of Game 1. They overcame a four-run deficit in Game 2.
In this current series, Chourio has collected eight hits in the first three games. His regular season OPS from 2024 to 2026 stands at .799. His postseason OPS over the same span is .882. He became the first player with three consecutive 20-homer and 20-steal seasons before turning 23.
Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold called Chourio a superstar. Arnold was the general manager when Milwaukee signed Chourio out of Venezuela at age 16 in 2021. "He's turning into a superstar right in front of our eyes," Arnold said.
Field coordinator Néstor Corredor noticed Chourio getting anxious during a rematch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Corredor coached Chourio in the Venezuelan winter league and the World Baseball Classic. He observed the outfielder dialing back his approach. Chourio began working counts and shortening his swing.
"He's understanding that this is a complete team and he doesn't have to be the hero," Corredor said. Captain Christian Yelich noted that Chourio has a slow heartbeat and likes the moment. Backup catcher Gary Sánchez said Chouria prefers these high pressure moments to regular season play.
Chourio's middle name is Bryan, a reference to Kobe Bryant. His brother Jaison's middle name is Oneel, honoring Shaquille O'Neal. Chourio said he read Bryant's autobiography and tried to adopt his mentality. He believes he was born to perform in this environment. "I know how hard I've worked for this," Chourio said.
