Bloomington, Indiana, residents gathered for homecoming celebrations when gunfire shattered the weekend early Sunday morning. At least seven people were shot and transported to local hospitals following a disturbance in a large crowd.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on November 1. Bloomington Deputy Police Chief Ryan Pedigo stated that officers heard multiple gunshots near the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and Grant Street. The exact location was in the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, between Grant and Dunn streets. This area sits about two blocks west of the Indiana University campus.
Police had already been monitoring the crowd when the shooting began. Preliminary information suggests a disturbance in the group preceded the gunfire. Officers spotted a man carrying a firearm running northeast away from the scene. They pursued him and took him into custody east of Indiana Avenue near Dunn Meadow. Investigators recovered a gun near the detention site.
Pedigo noted that authorities had not yet determined if the detained man fired any shots. Police found numerous shell casings of different calibers on the sidewalk near 420 E. Kirkwood Avenue. This detail has left the number of potential shooters unclear.
The seven confirmed victims include four males and three females. Their ages range from 17 to 27. Ambulances transported all seven to area hospitals. No deaths had been reported at the time of the report. Investigators continue to check for additional injured individuals who have not yet sought medical attention.
The shooting took place hours after Indiana University’s homecoming football game. The No. 4 ranked Hoosiers defeated Minnesota 23-16 in overtime on Saturday, October 31. Authorities have not established a link between the game and the street disturbance.
