The Minnesota Wild arrived in Washington with the Central Division lead and a recent surge of eight points in their last nine games. They used that momentum to dismantle the Capitals on Sunday night, securing a 5-1 win that ended Washington's three-game winning streak.

The game was decided in the opening minutes. Quinn Hughes scored just 3 minutes and 42 seconds into the game, marking his fifth goal of the season. Michael McCarron added a shot from the slot shortly after, giving Minnesota a 2-0 lead by the 5:27 mark.

Washington struggled to generate offense against a stingy Minnesota defense. The Wild allowed two goals or fewer for the fifth time in six games, with goalie Jesper Wallstedt stopping key chances from Alex Tuch and Alex Ovechkin. Justin Sourdif scored the only goal for Washington in the dying seconds of the second period, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Minnesota extended the lead late in the third period. Maxim Shabanov scored a power-play goal with 2:23 remaining to restore a two-goal margin. Kirill Kaprizov added an empty-netter for his 500th career point and 15th goal of the season. Danila Yurov scored the final goal with 24.9 seconds left while the goalie was in net.

The loss snapped the point streak for Washington forward Jordan Kyrou. Alex Ovechkin, playing what he has called his final NHL season, had one goal in his first 13 games. He missed a wide-open netting early in the third when a pass from Cole Hutson bounced off his skate. Both teams return to action on Tuesday night, with Minnesota visiting Philadelphia and Washington hosting Dallas.
