Saturday night brought a violent end to the Magic City Classic, the largest historically Black college and university football game in the nation. The event, held in Birmingham, Alabama, turned tragic after a shooting erupted near the game venue.

Birmingham Police Department officers arrived at the 400 block of Graymont Avenue around 7:50 p.m. Upon arrival, they suspended all tailgating in the immediate area to secure the scene. Investigators recovered multiple firearms from the location and detained one individual. That person was taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Authorities confirmed one person dead and at least eight others injured. As of early Sunday morning, police reported one victim remained in critical condition. The other seven injured individuals were listed in stable condition. No police officers or first responders were hurt in the incident.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett described the event as a senseless act of violence. He noted that the classic is the city’s largest annual event, placing a heavy strain on local law enforcement resources. Other leaders in law enforcement quickly offered support, which Pickett said the department appreciated.

Pickett praised the bravery of his officers who ran toward the gunfire to triage and aid victims. He stated that seeing their courage and resilience while rendering aid on the scene demonstrated their dedication to saving lives. He expressed gratitude that all responding officers and assisting personnel were able to return home to their families that night.

The shooting occurred near the Magic City Classic, a staple of Birmingham’s annual calendar. The incident drew a large response from local and supporting law enforcement agencies. Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the shooting and the identities of the victims.
