Patriots Offense: McDaniels Credits Maye's Recovery Skills

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels pointed to quarterback Drake Maye's mental resilience as the primary driver of the team's recent success. The coordinator stated on Thursday that Maye has adopted a "tremendous approach" to managing in-game mistakes, a shift that coincides with the franchise's improvement.

The season has presented a stark contrast in Maye's statistical output. Through the first three weeks, the quarterback threw seven interceptions while the Patriots dropped two of their first three contests. Over the subsequent four games, his turnover rate fell to three, and the team won three of those matchups to improve its standing.

McDaniels explained that Maye now understands how a single error reduces the margin for error in a 60-minute game. The coordinator noted that this awareness sharpens the quarterback's focus. He added that the initial reaction to a mistake is often a gut punch, but Maye has learned to view the remainder of the contest as a fresh opportunity to execute.

A key component of this adjustment is Maye's demeanor on the sideline. McDaniels observed that the young leader maintains his vocal presence even after committing a turnover. The coordinator emphasized that a quarterback must continue to motivate and encourage teammates in the huddle, regardless of individual performance in a given quarter.

This leadership style was tested during the Week 7 loss to the Chicago Bears. Maye threw a costly interception in the second quarter that put New England behind. He responded by driving the offense for touchdowns on his next two possessions, keeping the game competitive until the final minutes.
