UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava announced on Thursday that an injury to his left leg has ended his 2026 season. The senior posted on Instagram that he is heartbroken by how the year concluded, marking his first public remarks since the injury occurred in mid-October. He stated that he has finally accepted the situation and intends to continue relying on his faith while he recovers.
The injury happened during a victory over Oregon on October 11. Late in the first half, Iamaleava was tackled by two defenders, causing his left leg to twist. He returned to the field after missing one play but did not start the second half. Coach Bob Chesney confirmed the next week that Iamaleava would miss the remainder of the season and undergo surgery.
Iamaleava posted strong numbers for the Bruins this year. He completed passes for 982 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 144 yards and one score. He transferred from Tennessee in April 2025 and has one year of eligibility remaining.
The Bruins enter Saturday's home game against Nevada with a 7-0 record and a No. 7 ranking. Nevada holds a 3-4 record. Ty Dieffenbach will start at quarterback for the third time in Iamaleava's absence. Dieffenbach has passed for 505 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in his previous starts.
