Mike Vrabel told WEEI hosts on Monday that media coverage of his team often feels excessive. The New England Patriots defeated the Miami Dolphins 24-19 on Sunday, recovering from a 13-3 halftime deficit. Vrabel said the win resulted from a mix of strategic adjustments and improved player execution.
During the interview, the head coach expressed frustration with questions about wide receiver A.J. Brown. Brown missed the Sunday game due to a knee injury and had earlier dealt with an ankle issue. Vrabel stated that he would check on Brown's availability that week. When the hosts pressed for more detail, Vrabel repeated his initial answer without adding new information.
The coach interrupted a subsequent question about running back Rhamondre Stevenson with sarcasm. He suggested the team should bench the player. He clarified later that the comment applied to any player who makes a mistake. Vrabel argued that the media often reacts as if a single error warrants firing or benching a player.
Vrabel specifically referenced quarterback Drake Maye in his critique. He asked the hosts to imagine the reaction if Maye were benched after throwing a few interceptions. He called that type of scrutiny ridiculous. He noted that the hosts should continue asking their questions because the format seems to work for them.
Stevenson carried the ball 19 times for 82 yards in the win against Miami. He also caught three passes for eight yards. Vrabel praised the 28-year-old running back for his versatility and ball security. The coach highlighted Stevenson's growth as a leader within the backfield and his improved technique since the previous season.
Vrabel also addressed controversial officiating decisions from Sunday. He mocked the unnecessary roughing penalty called on linebacker Christian Elliss. He joked that he told the referee it was a great call. He referenced a similar joke he made about a previous fine for his comments to officials.
The coach also discussed the ruling on a Kyle Williams catch in the end zone. The initial call of a fumble was reversed to a touchdown after review. Vrabel feigned throwing a challenge flag while describing the moment. He questioned the length of the review but acknowledged the value of the review system.
The NFL trade deadline is set for Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. The Patriots have limited cap space for moves. Vrabel said the team will attempt to improve its roster if opportunities arise. He confirmed that conversations with other teams are ongoing as the deadline approaches.
