The final stretch of the midterm elections has become a high-stakes financial showdown, with Elon Musk pouring a fresh wave of capital into the race. In a move that underscores the intense competition for control of Congress, the billionaire injected over $76 million into his personal political committee, America PAC, during the first two weeks of October. This significant transfer, reported to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday evening, marks a decisive escalation in his effort to support Republican candidates as they enter the closing phase of the campaign.

The numbers behind this financial surge are substantial. America PAC deployed nearly $43 million in advertising and outreach during that same two-week period. As the election approaches, the committee is sitting on a cash reserve of nearly $47 million, ensuring it has ample resources to sustain its operations through election day. This liquidity provides the group with the flexibility to adjust its strategy in real time based on polling data and ground reports.

The Texas Senate race has emerged as the primary recipient of this new funding. The committee allocated $15.2 million to that specific contest, a figure that is double the total amount spent in that state during the entire summer. Of that sum, $12.4 million was dedicated to attacking Democratic challenger James Talarico, while $2.8 million went toward promoting Republican candidate Ken Paxton. Subsequent daily filings indicate an additional $9.1 million was spent against Talarico, bringing his total exposure to nearly $28 million for the cycle.

This targeted spending represents roughly 40 percent of everything America PAC has spent on candidates this election year. The group has also shifted its tactics, moving heavily toward digital platforms. It spent $11.4 million on online ads in the last fortnight, a volume nearly equal to what it has spent on traditional mail and texting combined. This pivot to digital channels allows for rapid message deployment and precise audience targeting in the crucial final days.

Musk’s overall financial commitment to the Republican cause remains unmatched. His total contributions to Republican political groups this cycle have exceeded $445 million, cementing his status as the largest known individual donor in these midterms. Since July alone, more than $165 million has flowed into America PAC. The committee declined to comment on the latest filings or its strategic direction.

Beyond the money, Musk has actively engaged in the narrative war surrounding the Texas contest. He has used his social media presence on X to criticize Talarico, calling him a "creep" and suggesting he is "deeply wrong." Musk also claimed, without providing evidence, that the Democrat would vote to take away voters' kids and transition them. Earlier in the month, he amplified a false claim that Talarico had been treated at a mental health facility, a remark that drew a sharp response from the candidate.

Talarico fired back immediately, stating that there is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal U.S. Senator. The exchange highlights the personal nature of the campaign, which has moved beyond standard policy debates into a direct clash between the candidates and their most prominent backer.

Despite the massive financial input, the race remains a toss-up. An Emerson College poll of 1,000 likely Texas voters, conducted from October 17 to 19, shows Talarico leading by two points, with 48 percent support compared to 46 percent for Paxton. The margin is within the poll's three-point error range, indicating a very tight contest that could be decided by a small percentage of undecided voters.

The stakes extend well beyond the winner in Texas. If Democrats secure control of the House, committee leaders have signaled they will launch investigations into Musk’s role in the Department of Government Efficiency. They also plan to scrutinize federal contracts awarded to his companies and the significant number of conflicts of interest identified by California Representative Zoe Lofgren. A unified Democratic Congress would present even greater challenges for the billionaire.

Silicon Valley Democrats have added another dimension to the potential oversight. On Friday, Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna sent a letter to the White House demanding an investigation into SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. They vowed that the next Congress will closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to Musk’s businesses, signaling that financial leverage may be a key tool in the coming legislative session.
