Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu are pushing for a billionaires’ wealth tax in Massachusetts. They intend to place the measure on the ballot in two years. The proposal mirrors Proposition 40 in California. Both officials lead the state’s Democratic Party.

Pressley and Wu are also opposing Question 3. This ballot item would establish all-party primaries for federal and state elections. Under the rule, the top two finishers advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation. Current Democratic incumbents view this structure as a threat to their re-election prospects.

Pressley has argued that only wealthy billionaires could benefit from the primary change. She contends the system would favor donors with deep pockets. Critics note that Pressley is positioned to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Elizabeth Warren. Wu may also seek a Senate seat or a spot on the 2028 Democratic presidential ticket.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez currently leads in early polling for the 2028 Democratic nomination. These polls are considered unreliable due to their early stage. Her position has emboldened the party’s left wing. She is described as a likely loser in a general election against a Republican opponent.

Democrats expect to take control of the House and potentially the Senate after the midterms. Victory in ultra-liberal jurisdictions like New York City is anticipated. However, the party risks alienating moderate voters in the center of the country. The internal dynamic favors candidates from the radical fringe who may lack broad national appeal.

Massachusetts is considered a safe Democratic state. The party has the resources to support candidates in cities like Somerville and Cambridge. The challenge for national Democrats lies in translating this local strength into wins in moderate middle America. The current leadership strategy relies on defeating President Trump through aggressive opposition.

Pressley and Wu are described as socialists in all but name. They are leading the party’s leftward shift. The upcoming midterms will determine if the party can maintain its momentum or if the far-left agenda will dampen its electoral success.
