New York Gov. Kathy Hochul told rapper Nicki Minaj to get offline on Wednesday, a direct response to the musician's viral social media post calling the governor "an evil woman." The exchange has injected a pop-culture element into the closing days of the state's gubernatorial race.
Minaj, a self-described supporter of former President Donald Trump, posted a message accusing Hochul of failing to condemn wrongdoing and keeping "horrible company." She wrote that the Democratic Party should forfeit Hochul's seat and that the governor would face "God's wrath" for her actions.
The feud marks a reversal for Minaj, who endorsed Hochul during her 2018 lieutenant governor campaign. Earlier this week, Minaj appeared at a Trump rally in Michigan and urged young voters to "vote red" in the upcoming election.
Hochul addressed the comments while campaigning in Albany. "I think she should ought to get outside and get offline a little more," Hochul said. "And stop going to Trump rallies because it's poisoning your mind."
The clash occurs as Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman make their final push toward Election Day. Recent polling shows Hochul holding a double-digit lead in the race. Blakeman continued a statewide tour on Wednesday focused on energizing Republican voters.
