SmartAsset calculated that a family of four in Massachusetts requires $329,555 in annual pre-tax income to live comfortably in 2026. The financial services company analyzed data from the MIT Living Wage Calculator to determine the earnings necessary for households to cover essential expenses while maintaining a savings buffer. This figure marks the highest requirement for a four-person household across all 50 states.

The analysis applies the 50/30/20 budgeting rule to MIT data, which was last updated in February 2026. Under this framework, 50% of income covers necessities such as housing and utilities, 30% covers discretionary spending, and 20% goes toward retirement and emergency savings. The resulting estimates represent the total annual income a full-time worker must earn to meet these targets.

For single adults, the cost of living varies considerably by state. Hawaii presents the highest financial barrier, requiring $129,002 for a single person to live comfortably. At the other end of the spectrum, West Virginia is the least expensive state for individuals, with a required income of $81,245. Mississippi is the most affordable state for families of four, where the threshold stands at $187,533.

Most states saw an increase in the income needed to maintain a comfortable lifestyle compared to 2025. Montana recorded the largest year-over-year rise, with the required income for a single adult jumping 8.6% to $100,797. New York followed with an 8.4% increase, bringing the requirement to $124,342. Maine, California, and Massachusetts also saw double-digit or near double-digit percentage increases in their living costs.

In 40 states, a family of two working adults and two children needs at least $200,000 annually to cover basic needs. The threshold exceeds $100,000 for a single adult in nearly half of all states. Even in the least expensive states, a single worker must earn more than $80,000 to meet the study's definition of financial comfort.

Six states reported a decline in the income required to live comfortably since 2025. Tennessee saw the largest drop, with the requirement for a single adult falling 1.7% to $89,898. Maryland, Louisiana, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas also experienced decreases. In each of these states, the 2026 income threshold is lower than the 2025 figure.

The data reflects minimum basic needs for a full-time worker. The study notes that source data providers are not affiliated with or endorsing the analysis. The figures serve as a baseline for what households must earn to allocate funds according to the specified budgeting ratios.
