Israeli troops demolished illegally constructed buildings near the northern entrance to Hebron on Saturday, following the killing of two soldiers the previous day. The military operation, which began Friday, has resulted in the search of roughly 200 locations and the arrest of 10 suspects.
The deadly shooting occurred at Yehuda Junction on Friday, killing St.-Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem. The military stated that the subsequent demolitions were intended to enforce law and order and remove security threats posed by the structures in the immediate vicinity of the attack.
The counterterrorism campaign is led by the Judea Brigade and includes personnel from the Duvdevan and Maglan units, the Paratroopers Brigade, Givati reconnaissance reservists, and Border Police. The Shin Bet security agency provides intelligence guidance for the effort. Troops have searched family homes and surrounding areas for weapons, explosives laboratories, and terrorist infrastructure.
IDF assessments indicate that approximately 2,000 residents in the targeted area belong to the Ja'aba clan. Military officials in Central Command identified the attackers as Hamouda and Firas al-Ja'aba, both Hamas affiliates from the Ein Dir-Baha neighborhood. The clan is described as affiliated with Hamas, and the gunmen originated from that group.
Evacuations began Friday evening in the al-Jalda and Ein Dir-Baha neighborhoods, which are densely populated districts in western Hebron. Civilians requested to leave were permitted to exit through designated checkpoints operated by the Shin Bet and the IDF. Officials said removing residents allows security forces to search structures thoroughly without endangering civilians.
A situational assessment was scheduled for Saturday to determine if the operation would expand. In the interim, Brig.-Gen. Kobi Heller, commander of the IDF's West Bank Division, ordered broader arrest operations and searches in Nablus, Jenin, and Tulkarm, as well as other locations in Samaria.
The expanded military activity coincides with concerns that Hamas leadership abroad is orchestrating terrorist attacks ahead of upcoming elections. The security establishment views the western Hebron area as a center of Hamas operational activity.
