Google is introducing a new security tier for its Android messaging app to combat spam and fraud.

The company announced the Enhanced Protection mode earlier in October. It builds on the existing Standard Protection feature, which already filters suspected harmful links and spam. This new level adds advanced detection capabilities to identify scam attempts more effectively.

Three distinct tools launch with the update. Scam Detection uses cloud-based Gemini models to analyze message threads and determine the intent of unknown senders. Google states this method handles complex attacks better than current on-device systems. The feature processes data within Android's Private AI Compute environment. Messages are encrypted in a secure space that Google describes as private to the user, keeping the data away from the company itself.

Enhanced link protection is the second component. It pairs the on-device Gemini Nano model with real-time web signals to evaluate unfamiliar links before users tap them. This specific capability is available on the Pixel 10 and newer models, the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 8, and the Z Fold 8.

The third change redesigns warning alerts. When a link arrives from an unsaved number, users receive more context and time to pause before interacting with the message. Enhanced Protection is an opt-in feature. Users activate it through the app's Protection and safety settings. The menu now offers three options: Enhanced protection, Standard protection, and No protection. The app labels the final option as not recommended. The feature appeared in the latest beta version, identified as 20261020_00_RC00.

The rollout is currently underway for Android users.
