The Chinese smartphone market just hit rock bottom, yet one American giant is swimming against the current. While the industry as a whole suffered its worst quarter in fourteen years, Apple managed to climb to second place. This stark contrast highlights a growing divide between a struggling sector and a company that is finding new ways to attract buyers despite a tough economic backdrop.

Here is how we arrived at this strange moment. For the third quarter of 2026, Counterpoint Research reported that total smartphone shipments in China dropped by 10 percent compared to the same period last year. The primary driver was rising memory prices, which squeezed manufacturers and pushed up costs. Amid this general decline, Apple was the standout performer, jumping from sixth place to second in the rankings.

Huawei remains the leader in the region. The company held a 21.3 percent market share, which was an increase of 5.3 percentage points from a year ago. Apple followed closely with a 19.5 percent share, up by 4.8 percentage points. These were the only two major brands that gained ground. Every other top player saw their influence shrink, indicating that consumer loyalty is shifting rapidly toward these two options.

The losses for other manufacturers were significant. Vivo saw its share fall by 2.8 percentage points to 15.2 percent. OPPO slipped by 1.3 points to 15.1 percent. Xiaomi dropped 1.6 points to end at 13.5 percent, while HONOR declined by 2.2 points to 12.7 percent. The remaining manufacturers, grouped together, lost 2 points of share and finished the quarter with just 2.8 percent of the market.

Apple’s success is largely attributed to its latest flagship devices. Counterpoint noted that the iPhone 18 Pro series had a strong launch in China. Sales for the first three weeks of the new model were up 23.5 percent year over year when compared to the previous iPhone 17 Pro series. The research firm also suggested that the delayed release of the base iPhone 18 may have pushed some customers toward the more expensive Pro models, boosting early revenue.

It is worth noting that different research firms offer slightly different numbers for this period. A report from IDC released a few days earlier estimated that Chinese shipments fell by 15.4 percent year over year. IDC also placed Apple’s market share at 17.8 percent, even though iPhone shipments in that calculation declined by 4.3 percent. These discrepancies are common in industry tracking, but both firms agree that Apple is outperforming its competitors.

The global picture is equally grim. IDC estimated that worldwide smartphone shipments fell by a record 22 percent year over year in the third quarter. Apple posted the smallest decline among the top five manufacturers, with a drop of only 4 percent. This relative resilience suggests that the company’s brand strength and product mix are helping it weather a storm that is battering the rest of the industry.

Looking ahead, experts warn that the difficult conditions may persist. Higher prices are causing many consumers to delay their upgrades. Some are waiting for promotional sales events, while others are turning to refurbished devices to save money. This shift in buying behavior could put further pressure on demand in the fourth quarter, making it a critical period for manufacturers to retain their customer base.

For now, the data tells a story of resilience for Apple in a challenging environment. While the overall market is shrinking, the company has managed to expand its footprint in China. Whether this trend continues into the next quarter will depend on how consumers respond to pricing and how competitors adjust their strategies in the face of rising costs.
