Jonathan Bamba's two goals forced the Colorado Rapids into a defensive shell against a Chicago Fire squad that refused to settle for a draw. The 4-2 result on Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo., gave the Fire 55 points, placing them one point behind Miami with only one match left in the regular season.
The contest swung back and forth before the Fire took control. Morgan Whittaker opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, his third straight goal in a match. Bamba leveled the score in the 41st minute, sending the teams to the break tied 1-1. Paxten Aaronson gave Colorado a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute, but Bamba struck again in the 56th to reclaim the advantage for Chicago. It marked Bamba's first multi-goal performance in Major League Soccer.
The Fire extended their lead in the 74th minute. Robert Lewandowski received a through ball from Philip Zinckernagel near the top of the box. He cut past goalkeeper Nico Hansen, who had rushed off his line, and finished from close range. Puso Dithejane added a fourth goal in the 88th minute, finishing a pass from Lewandowski.
The loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak for Colorado. The Rapids finished with 12 wins, 14 losses, and seven draws, accumulating 43 points. They sit eighth in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Real Salt Lake.
Both teams have one final regular-season match scheduled for next Saturday. Chicago will host Columbus at home, while Colorado will travel to play at Dallas. The outcome of those games will determine final standing in their respective conferences.
