Miami quarterback Darian Mensah threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Toney in the final two minutes of Saturday night’s game at Chapel Hill. The score extended the Hurricanes' lead to 38-28, effectively ending a high-scoring contest against North Carolina. Miami finished with an 8-0 record and a No. 1 national ranking.

The victory came after a late surge. Mark Fletcher Jr. ran for a 2-yard touchdown on fourth down with 7:49 remaining to put Miami ahead. Shortly after, defensive end Marquise Lightfoot stripped the ball from North Carolina quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. During the ensuing scramble, Justin Scott recovered the fumble with 5:33 left on the clock. That sequence shifted the momentum decisively in Miami's favor.

Lightfoot explained his timing in the play. He said Edwards decided to hold the ball a little longer while trying to throw, which allowed Lightfoot to close the distance. "He decided to take a second decision, bat the ball, hold the ball a little longer," Lightfoot said, "so I was able to get there."

Before the final drive, North Carolina led 28-24. The Tar Heels sustained long drives throughout the evening, including a 16-play possession that lasted nearly eight and a half minutes. Their offense moved the chains consistently, keeping Miami’s defense occupied. North Carolina finished with four touchdowns, two of which went to tight end Jelani Thurman.

Mensah completed two touchdown passes to Toney during the game. Fletcher also contributed three rushing touchdowns, a performance that tied the program’s career rushing touchdown mark. Miami’s offense operated at a high level, typical of a team that leads the nation in scoring. The Hurricanes allowed North Carolina to score 35 points, which was their highest total in regulation this season.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal noted that the defense struggled with coverage details. "I thought there were some soft spots in our coverage where our zone drops weren't as good, as detailed," Cristobal said. He added that the team was sporadic in tackling and lost in man coverage at times. Despite the defensive lapses, the offense outscored North Carolina in the fourth quarter.

North Carolina fell to 0-12 all-time against No. 1 ranked teams. The loss extended a recent slump where they dropped a home overtime game to Syracuse in the previous week. North Carolina coach Bill Belichick praised the effort but acknowledged the result. "Lot of effort, lot of toughness, lot of mental toughness, lot of competitiveness," Belichick said. "Just disappointing to come up short here two weeks in a row."

Miami will travel to face No. 5 Notre Dame next Saturday. That game is a rematch of the contest last year that decided the College Football Playoff bid. North Carolina will leave conference play to visit UConn in their next contest.
