Apple has enabled Dolby Atmos audio for Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV. The upgrade went live on Friday, October 23, for the United States Grand Prix weekend. This marks the first time a Formula 1 race has been broadcast in the format.
Apple and Dolby Laboratories announced the partnership earlier this month. The company stated the new audio profile aims to place viewers inside the race environment. It includes team radio, commentary, engine noise, and pit lane activity. Apple said the combination of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision creates a high-fidelity experience for fans.
The weekend schedule has begun. Practice 1 has already concluded. Subscribers can watch the remaining sessions in the new audio format. Practice 2 aired at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, October 23. Practice 3 is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 24. Qualifying follows at 5 p.m. ET on the same day.
The main race starts at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 25. Apple is hosting a live viewing party at its Domain NORTHSIDE store in Austin, Texas. The location recently hosted the iPhone Duo launch, attended by CEO John Ternus and retail chief Deirdre O'Brien.
Apple also updated Apple Maps for the event. The company expanded its Detailed City Experience to Austin. The new map features the Circuit of The Americas with specific details. It shows turn numbers, grandstands, and 3D landmarks to assist visitors in navigating the venue.
Apple TV costs $14.99 per month. Users can also access the service through the Apple One bundle. The platform streams other titles including Ted Lasso, Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
