A joint session on protecting personal finances drew members of the public and local residents to the NYC Parks Fort Hamilton Senior Recreation Center on Monday, Oct. 19.
The presentation took place at 11:30 a.m. at the center located at 9941 Fort Hamilton Parkway. Apple Bank branch manager Joann Loddo and NYPD crime prevention officer Daniel Boyle of the 68th Precinct led the discussion.
Loddo and Boyle addressed specific vulnerabilities in modern banking. They reviewed online banking security protocols and identified common financial scams that target older adults in the community.
The speakers also detailed physical threats to money, including mail theft and the practice of check washing. Check washing involves altering the amount on a check using solvents, a fraud method Boyle explained to the attendees.
The event was open to all Center members as well as the general public. It marked one of several recent community gatherings focused on local history and civic engagement in Bay Ridge.
Nearby, the Leif Erikson Society of Bay Ridge held its annual commemorative luncheon on Oct. 10 at the Bridgeview Dinner. Society member Shirley Olsen spoke on Viking customs during the event. The group was founded in 1971 by attorney and historian John Carlson.
Looking ahead, the 106th New York City Veterans Day Parade will take place on Nov. 11. The route runs along Fifth Avenue from 26th Street to 48th Street, beginning at 12:30 p.m. United Military Veterans of Kings County, a Bay Ridge-based unit, will participate in the procession.
