A man armed with a knife died Friday morning after Boston police officers fired at him on Selkirk Road in Brighton. Police Commissioner Michael Cox said officers arrived at the address around 7:00 a.m. in response to a report that the man was threatening to harm himself. Before they reached the location, officers were told the individual might be experiencing a mental health crisis.
Officers spoke with the man for about 20 minutes trying to de-escalate the situation, Cox said. The man then turned on the officers, threatening to injure them. While pursuing one officer, the man was shot in the abdomen. Police said the shots were fired to stop the threat. The man was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, and police later confirmed he died there.
Two officers involved in the incident were also taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said his office will lead the investigation into the shooting, as it does whenever an officer fires a weapon. "These situations are always changing; they are never easy," Hayden said.
