K9 Find and Foot Chase Lead to Gun Recovery in Newburgh

A loaded Ruger semi-automatic handgun was recovered from a backpack during a foot chase in Newburgh on Monday. The suspect, identified as Antione Polk, was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident began when the City of Newburgh Police Department received a ShotSpotter activation on Liberty Street. The acoustic sensor indicated that rounds had been fired. Dispatchers provided responding officers with a description of a suspect. An officer located Polk near the intersection of East Parmenter Street and Amity Street. He fled on foot, leading the officer on a short pursuit. During the chase, Polk dropped a backpack. Police later found the loaded firearm inside the bag.

K9 Tate canvassed the original location on Liberty Street where the ShotSpotter alert triggered. The dog located several spent shell casings at the scene. This physical evidence supported the acoustic data that prompted the initial response.

Polk is a 30-year-old resident of the City of Newburgh. He faces charges related to the possession of the weapon found in the backpack. The recovery of the gun and the shell casings concluded the immediate investigation into the Monday night shooting alert.
