Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is recovering from a stroke at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His office confirmed the hospitalization on Sunday.

Murphy, 53, began feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son's hockey game. Staff transported him to a local facility where medical tests revealed the stroke. He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for closer monitoring. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said the senator is responding well to treatment.

Herwitt stated in a written release that Murphy is expected to make a full recovery. She noted that he was discovered to have experienced the event after initial symptoms appeared during the game.

Murphy has remained an active voice in the Senate during the midterm campaign season. He recently returned from a tour of the Middle East. Upon his return, he warned that President Trump would significantly expand military operations against Iran once the elections concluded. Murphy is widely viewed as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential nomination.

The senator's health event follows a series of medical absences among members of Congress in 2026. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., spent several months in rehabilitation after a previous hospital stay. Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., missed a substantial portion of the session while undergoing treatment for depression.

In 2022, three prominent Democrats faced similar health challenges. Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-Senate candidate John Fetterman were all hospitalized for strokes during that year.
