Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) is receiving treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore following a stroke. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, released a statement on Sunday confirming the senator is awake, alert, and responding well to medical care. Doctors at the facility have expressed optimism regarding his full recovery.

Murphy, who is 53 years old, began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday, October 31. He was at a local hockey game watching his son when the symptoms started. Staff transported him to a nearby facility, where medical professionals diagnosed the stroke. The initial hospital has not been named in the public release.

The health incident occurred while Murphy was traveling for the midterm campaign. Politico reported that the senator had visited Michigan, Minnesota, and Florida in the days leading up to the stroke. He had plans to attend campaign events in New Hampshire on Sunday, but his condition has paused that schedule. No specific date has been set for his return to work.

Murphy has served in the United States Senate since 2012, representing Connecticut. He won reelection in 2018 and again in 2024, securing a term that extends through January 2031. Before his time in Washington, he held seats in the Connecticut General Assembly and served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Connecticut’s fifth district from 2007 to 2013.

Born in White Plains, New York, Murphy grew up in Wethersfield, Connecticut. He earned his undergraduate degree from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1996 and his law degree from the University of Connecticut in 2002. He is widely known for his advocacy on gun violence legislation, a focus that intensified following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012.
