The New York Rangers entered Tuesday with a seven-game losing streak looming over their season after dropping their last four contests. The team now sits at 7-7-1, a record that suggests a sharp decline from their initial momentum. The central issue is no longer scoring; the Rangers have found the net consistently in recent weeks. The problem lies squarely in the net, a weakness that became apparent when starter Igor Shesterkin was injured.

Relief goalie Dylan Garand has struggled to maintain his early success, posting an .847 save percentage over the last four games. His struggles were compounded by the performance of James Reimer, who was called up from the Hartford Wolf Pack to serve as backup. Reimer was pulled in the first period of the match against the Los Angeles Kings after surrendering three goals on nine shots.

The most recent defeat to the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night offered a stark look at the team's current vulnerability. The Rangers had five days off between games, a potential reset period, while the Oilers were playing the second half of a back-to-back. Edmonton started Matt Tomkins, a goaltender who had not started an NHL game in two and a half years. Despite this mismatch, the Rangers lost 4-1, a result that has intensified scrutiny on the defensive end.

Garand accepted the blame for the loss to Edmonton, noting that his performance in the first period was poor. “Honestly, I felt really, really good in the second 30 minutes, and I thought my first 30 minutes was awful,” he said. “Honestly, inexcusable. Let the guys down. Pretty disappointing; put that loss on me.”

The team's current 15-point total keeps them just one point behind the Washington Capitals, who hold third place in the Metropolitan Division. However, the window for building a sustainable record is closing. The American Thanksgiving holiday serves as a traditional benchmark for assessing playoff viability. Historical data indicates that 77% of teams in a postseason spot by that date make the playoffs.

For the Rangers to remain competitive and potentially pressure general manager Chris Drury into making roster moves, they must be firmly in the playoff conversation by November 26. The upcoming schedule will test whether the team can stabilize its goaltending before the holiday deadline forces a harder look at their standing.

Garand’s comments and the team’s recent results suggest that the management and players are aware of the urgency. The next few games will determine if the Rangers can halt their slide or if the season continues its rapid descent.
