Florida State University has fired head football coach Mike Norvell, marking the fourth major coaching change in the 2026 Power 4 conference landscape. The decision came two days after the Seminoles lost to Clemson in Week 9 of the regular season. This move ends a tenure defined by early promise followed by a prolonged decline in competitive standing.

Norvell’s initial two seasons from 2022 to 2023 saw the team post a combined record of 23-4. However, performance metrics dropped sharply in subsequent years. The squad finished with a 2-10 mark in 2024, followed by a 5-7 record in 2025. The current 2026 campaign stands at 3-4. These results prompted the administration to seek new leadership to stabilize the program in a shifting collegiate athletic environment.

A reported buyout of approximately $50 million is owed to Norvell. This financial obligation adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing search process. The university must balance its historical status as a premier football destination with the immediate budgetary constraints imposed by the departure.

Insiders from the 247Sports affiliate Noles247 have identified Duke head coach Manny Diaz as a primary candidate. Diaz is a 1995 Florida State graduate and a Miami native, creating strong local ties. At Duke, he holds a 6-2 record for the current season. Over his first two years there, he posted an 18-9 record and secured the 2025 ACC title with an overtime victory over Virginia.

Diaz signed a contract extension through 2031 in April of this year. His resume also includes two seasons as defensive coordinator at Penn State. From 2019 to 2021, he served as head coach at the University of Miami, where he compiled a 21-15 record. Noles247 writer Kolby Crawford noted that Diaz’s status as an alumnus makes him an intriguing possibility for the role.

Other names are circulating on the hot board, though specific details remain guarded by the coverage team. One candidate is described as a proven program-builder at every level he has touched. The search committee is reviewing these options alongside the financial implications of the Norvell buyout.

The university has not announced a specific timeline for hiring a new head coach. The process is underway as the team prepares for its remaining games in the 2026 season. No further public statements have been released regarding the criteria for the selection process.
