A prototype cartridge of Pokémon Red for the Nintendo Game Boy is currently listed at Goldin auction. As of October 23, 2026, the item holds one bid at $25,000. The listing was first identified by Retro Dodo, which called the physical object incredibly rare.

Specialists at Professional Sports Authenticator verified the cartridge’s authenticity. They could not perform a full data read, but they successfully accessed the first 32 kilobytes of the file system. PSA labeled that partial read technically unique. The firm stated the accessible game data is completely identical to the United States retail version. It expressed confidence that the remaining unreadable sections match the standard release.

The authentication report identified two specific differences in the ROM header data. Neither change alters gameplay. PSA noted the Mask ROM version field at offset 0x014C is incorrectly set to 55 instead of 00. This error forces the calculated header checksum at offset 0x014D to read CB rather than the standard 20.

Physical labels on the cartridge provide clues about its internal components. A sticker reads DMB-MBC-16M-FLASH. The part number is listed as DMG-(F)KGDB-01. Analysts suggest DMB likely references Dot Matrix Game, the original internal codename for the Game Boy. MBC probably stands for Memory Bank Controller. The 16M designation likely indicates 16 megabits of flash-writable memory. This custom chip allowed games to exceed the console's standard 32KB ROM limit. The prototype is also physically longer than a standard retail cartridge.

The auction describes the internal board as previously undocumented. However, the specific part number has appeared in prior records. The Rare Gaming Dump wiki lists the same DMG-(F)KGDB-01 number for a 2000 development cartridge. That earlier unit also used a 16-megabit Sharp flash chip labeled U1 FLASH MEMORY. Images in the current listing show an almost identical board design. The older wiki entry displays a slightly different sticker that reads DMG-MBC3-16M-FLASH.

Pokémon Red launched in 1998 alongside Green and Blue. The franchise helped establish the global Pokémon brand during the 1990s. Reports indicate Red and Blue combined sold more than 31 million copies. The current auction closes in several days. The current bidder may win the item, though the final price could rise before bidding ends.

A commenter on the original report provided context on how such items reach the market. They cited a Nintendo Age user named Pal rocks who sold a batch of demo cartridges in 2015. Those units reportedly came from a Nintendo employee who kept them instead of destroying them. The commenter claimed this specific copy is a master copy that powers on and plays normally. Those details come from a reader comment and have not been independently verified.
