Americans received larger paychecks in the past year, yet they have less cash available for spending after accounting for price increases. The gap between what workers earn and what goods cost continues to widen, squeezing household budgets despite higher nominal income.

The U.S. Department of Labor reported that total compensation for civilian workers increased by 3.4% over the 12 months ending in September. This figure includes both wages and benefits. Wages and salaries specifically rose by 3.1%, while the cost of benefits climbed 3.9%.

When adjusted for inflation, the numbers tell a different story. Private-sector workers saw their real wages drop by 0.6% over the same period. State and local government employees experienced a 0.5% decline in purchasing power. These figures indicate that price hikes are moving faster than pay raises, eroding the value of earnings.

The report underscores a tension for policymakers. The Federal Reserve is attempting to control inflation without causing a steep decline in hiring or wage growth. Last month, government data showed that consumer inflation accelerated in September as the prices of goods and services continued to rise.

The Employment Cost Index serves as a key indicator for the Federal Reserve when assessing underlying wage pressures in the economy. Six weeks ago, the central bank raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time since 2023. Officials stated that another rate hike is possible later this year.
