For the families of the Duchess of Sussex, the news brings a familiar sense of anxiety. Meghan Markle has stated that she is deeply distressed by the reports that her father, Thomas Markle, is currently under investigation in the Philippines. The probe centers on allegations that he possessed child sexual abuse materials. In a statement released on Friday, the Duchess clarified that this was not a sudden surprise for her. She indicated that she has been aware of these serious claims against her father since 2018.
Markle explained that the details were formally passed to U.K. authorities at that time. She noted that a letter containing troubling allegations was sent to the Metropolitan Police and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit. That correspondence was then shared with her. She recalled receiving assurances that the matter was being actively investigated back then. However, current information suggests the Metropolitan Police did not open a formal investigation into Thomas Markle and is not doing so now. A spokesperson for the force acknowledged that officers from the specialized command helped pass the letter along in 2018. They are now conducting internal enquiries to confirm the details of that interaction.
The Duchess also took the opportunity to address the distance between herself and her father. She emphasized that her decision to limit contact was driven by a single goal: the protection of her children. She expressed hope that the public can now understand that her choice to keep her children away from their father was not due to media distortions over the years. For her, it was a deliberate measure to ensure their safety and well-being.
The current situation stems from a report made by Thomas Markle Jr., the Duchess's stepson. The Sun reported on Thursday that he alerted Philippine authorities about the findings. He allegedly discovered the materials in storage boxes at the family home in the Philippines. According to the Daily Mail, the senior Markle has denied the claims. He stated that he has never downloaded such files in his life and described the accusations as sick lies.
Reports indicate that Thomas Jr. made the discovery while his father was in the United States receiving treatment for a stroke and blood clot. He reportedly first saw the materials after turning on an old cell phone at the home. In July, he is said to have reported the matter to the FBI hotline, the National Center for Exploited and Missing Children, and state police in Pennsylvania. This timeline suggests the family has been aware of the issue for some time before the formal probe began.
Philippine state media confirmed on Friday that an investigation is underway. The Department of Justice is looking into reports involving an octogenarian American national who allegedly left child abuse videos and photos in his home in Cebu province. A Filipino justice official stated that the department's anti-trafficking task force is handling the case. The official confirmed that Thomas Markle Sr. is the subject of this specific inquiry.
In her closing remarks, Meghan expressed her sincerest hope that justice will be fully served. She stressed that the top priority must remain the safety and protection of innocent children involved in this situation.
