Apple plans to unveil a completely redesigned MacBook Pro at an event on October 28, according to reporting by 9to5Mac. The new laptop, to be announced at an event titled "Pro and tell," will feature a new industrial design, a lighter and thinner chassis, and an OLED display. A notable addition is touch input support, which the MacBook Pro line has not previously offered. The device is also expected to replace the screen notch with a Dynamic Island cutout.

The hardware changes come with a specific caveat regarding performance. The new model will use the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, the same processors introduced nearly eight months ago. This means the redesigned laptop will offer no increase in processing speed compared to the current models already available for sale.

Apple is reportedly skipping the M6 Pro and M6 Max generations to prioritize the M7 Pro and M7 Max chips for 2027. By using the existing M5 silicon, the company fills the gap between these future releases. Mark Gurman, who provided the reporting to 9to5Mac, noted that this strategy leaves the new MacBook Pro with the same engine as the previous generation.

Pricing for the new device remains uncertain. The current MacBook Pro is a premium product, and 9to5Mac suggests the redesign could carry a higher cost. The starting price could reach $2,999, which would represent an increase over the current lineup. While the outlet considered the possibility of Apple maintaining the current price point, it described that scenario as unlikely due to the ongoing memory crisis.

The company faces a marketing challenge in positioning this device for professional users. Many of these customers delayed purchasing an M5 Pro or M5 Max model earlier in the year. Apple must convince them that the design updates, including the touch screen and lighter weight, are sufficient reasons to upgrade despite the lack of a speed boost.

A less certain feature is the inclusion of a C2 cellular modem. If this detail proves accurate, the laptop would gain cellular connectivity, a first for the MacBook Pro. Apple has not yet confirmed any of the rumored specifications or the final pricing structure.

The October 28 event will determine how much of the reporting is correct. It will also show how Apple positions a redesigned laptop that relies on existing silicon against the backdrop of a product line known for performance leadership.
