Google is releasing version 5.11 of the Google Health app this week. The update targets owners of Fitbit trackers and Pixel Watches with improved workout recognition and new metabolic health tools.

The primary change expands automatic activity detection from 10 types to 100. This includes strength training, swimming, and various racket and team sports. The feature is live on the Fitbit Air, Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. The Fitbit Edge will gain this capability upon its October 27 launch.

Google attributes the improved accuracy to contextual reasoning that analyzes user routines and historical data. The company states this method nearly doubles detection accuracy and reduces missed workouts by more than half. A session is logged automatically if it meets a 15 minute duration threshold with sustained elevated heart rate. A summary usually appears in the app within 30 minutes of the activity ending.

Google Health Premium subscribers with a Fitbit Air or Fitbit Edge can now set up two new Health Guardian features. These track blood pressure trends and insulin resistance trends. Initial reports for blood pressure patterns are scheduled for early November. This data requires users to have worn a Fitbit Air for at least five consecutive days in October. Insulin resistance reports track monthly metabolic shifts and require seven days and nights of device wear during the month.

The app also renames the Blood glucose section to Glucose and updates associated charts. Users can set custom time-in-range goals for connected continuous glucose monitors. In the United States, Lingo by Abbott now connects directly to the platform. This integration allows glucose readings to appear in the app within 30 minutes. Premium members can also ask the Google Health Coach about these trends.

Sleep tracking has received two refinements. The system now uses step data to better identify short awakenings, such as bathroom trips. Users can also delete naps that do not fit their daily schedule directly from the nap card. Version 5.11 is currently available on iOS and is rolling out to Android devices.
