Federal agents arrested a 17-year-old resident of McKinney on October 5, authorities confirmed, after the teen allegedly plotted to assassinate Congressman Keith Self. The lawmaker represents North Texas's third congressional district and is currently seeking a third term in the upcoming midterm elections. Campaign officials learned of the detention on October 6 through U.S. Capitol Police, who informed them that investigators believed the suspect had been radicalized and was under federal monitoring.

The arrest reveals a specific target for the alleged attack: a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. According to the campaign, the event was to feature former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. Investigators told the congressman's team that the teen was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS and intended to strike at that gathering. The FBI Dallas office has not yet provided additional public details as of this writing.

Rep. Self stated that his response was guided by his background in military service. He noted that his prior deployments helped him remain calm rather than panicked upon hearing the news. He focused on determining if the suspect was a lone wolf, a question his team took seriously without letting the incident become a source of trauma. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also viewed the threat through that familiar lens.

The congressman acknowledged receiving threats in the past, but emphasized that this was the first instance where the situation escalated to an arrest. He described the incident as potentially very serious based on the information provided by investigators. Despite the heightened risk, Self attended the veterans event as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans, noting that the day passed without incident.

Since the arrest, Self has continued his campaign activities, including daily poll greeting and voter meetings. He stated that the plot will not deter him from alerting the American people to what he describes as a specific political ideology. His opponent, Evan Hunt, also condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. The teen's identity has not been released while the investigation continues.

The timing of the arrest coincides with Self's prominent stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and affirming the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law of the land. This legislative move aligns with local debates in McKinney, where the city council unanimously approved a site plan for a mosque expansion in August. That decision followed hours of contentious public comment and was later followed by an effort to recall several council members.

Self's campaign manager confirmed that the team increased its situational awareness and security measures following the news of the arrest. The congressman said he and his staff remained vigilant, watching their surroundings closely. He maintained that the team understood the gravity of the situation while continuing to execute their campaign duties without significant interruption.
