A 28-year-old woman suffered a critical neck injury after being attacked during a pre-dawn training run for the New York City Marathon on Friday night.
Police sources stated that Katie Suarez was jogging along a path near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue in Brooklyn shortly after 8 p.m. She did not return home to her family, prompting her father to search for her. He discovered her at the scene where she was found in critical condition.
The NYPD has not released the identity of any suspects or confirmed a motive for the attack. Investigators are utilizing a wide range of resources to locate the person responsible. These tools include K-9 units, scuba teams, drones, and a Crime Stoppers vehicle stationed near the area.
The incident has prompted local officials to examine the safety of the recreational route. New York State Senator Steve Chan noted that new lighting was installed on a recently rebuilt foot bridge near 17th Avenue. Chan stated that while some lights were added, the area requires more illumination to ensure safety for joggers and pedestrians.
Residents in the neighborhood expressed shock and increased caution following the event. One neighbor described the attack as terrible given its proximity to their homes. Another resident said they would now be more aware of their surroundings and might choose to exercise during safer hours.
The NYPD is asking witnesses to report any activity seen on the eastbound bike path along the Belt Parkway between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street. The specific time frame for potential sightings is between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m. on Friday. Flowers and candles have been placed outside Suarez’s home by community members.
