Alfred Hospital upgrades Haines condition to serious but stable

Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital confirmed on Saturday morning that Independent MP Helen Haines has moved out of critical care.

Her status is now listed as serious but stable, marking the first improvement since the 65-year-old was airlifted to the facility on Monday.

Haines was deliberately struck by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, located in north-east Victoria. Medical staff amputated both of her legs following the collision.

Phil Haines, her husband, described the event as a horrendous incident on Wednesday. He stated that while her physical injuries are severe, her heart and mind remain in good shape.

Police arrested Brendan Nugent, 43, shortly after the crash. He faces three charges, including dangerous driving causing serious injury and intentionally causing serious injury. A third charge covers causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

Nugent’s lawyer cited mental health concerns without providing specific details. Investigators from Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police are currently examining whether drug use or medication contributed to the incident. A specific motive has not yet been established.

The driver’s family told reporters they had been long-time friends of Haines. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on ABC television shortly after the attack, noting a rise in temperature and too much shouting in Australian discourse.
