Melania Trump's office announced on Friday that a six-day ceasefire will take effect in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky starting Thursday, Oct. 29.

The pause is designed to allow humanitarian aid to enter the city and to prepare a civilian evacuation along a designated safe route. Both Russia and Ukraine have agreed to halt all military action within the city limits during this period. The announcement credits the First Lady directly with brokering the deal, rather than President Trump or other senior officials.

According to the First Lady's office, she worked directly with leadership in both countries to define the terms of the localized ceasefire. She stated that she initiated the talks and aligned the parties on objectives, technical procedures, timing, and processes. Her office described her role as that of an "Exclusive Intermediary." Neither Moscow nor Kyiv had publicly commented on the announcement as of Friday, though Ukrainian officials indicated a tentative agreement had been reached for the occupied territory.

Mrs. Trump described the conditions in Oleshky as severe, noting that the remaining population consists mostly of elderly residents who need medical attention, food, and clean water. She said residents face limited electricity, mined roads, and regular attacks. In a statement, she said, "Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster." She added that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.

Under the plan, non-military civilian leaders from both nations will visit residents to assess their needs. Those who choose to leave will receive coordinated support and transportation to their chosen destination. Mrs. Trump noted that some residents may wish to go to Russia and others to Ukraine. She also arranged for Newsmax to document the work of both teams.

White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development "amazing news" on social media. He described it as a major step toward peace and said history would remember her tireless work. The announcement follows a recent phone call between Pope Leo and President Vladimir Putin, in which the Pope expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also helped reunite 34 children with their families after Russia forcibly removed them.

The ceasefire comes as President Trump's broader efforts to end the war have stalled. He had previously said he would end the conflict on his first day back in office. In recent days, he has expressed frustration with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine should have a new leader. He told reporters earlier this week that Russia has been fine on Ukraine and that they have not been doing much.
