Kylian Mbappe is aiming for the Ballon d'Or based primarily on individual statistics rather than team success, a strategy that contrasts with the award's recent history. He enters Monday's ceremony in London as a contender despite finishing the 2025-26 season without a major team trophy at either the club or international level.

The award period covered by this year's prize spans the 2025-26 campaign. Mbappe's Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. On the international stage, France placed fourth at the 2026 World Cup in North America, losing the semifinal to Spain and the third-place playoff to England. This marks the second consecutive season the club has gone without a major title.

Mbappe's strongest claim rests on his performance during the 2026 World Cup. He scored 22 goals in 22 matches, a total that makes him the all-time leading scorer in the tournament's history. This record places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who has 21 career World Cup goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe also won the Golden Boot at the tournament for the second consecutive edition.

At the club level, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward was the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals. He also led the scoring charts in the Champions League with 15 goals. Mbappe stated that being the all-time top scorer in the most important tournament in the sport stands out in his case for the award. He told RFI radio that the voters will announce a single player, not a team, and that individual performance is the key factor.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho supports the nomination. Mourinho noted that Mbappe has made history this summer and highlighted that the player does not represent Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team. The coach emphasized that the individual achievement is distinct from team results.

Other candidates have stronger resume of team success. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane from Bayern Munich collected three trophies last season, including the Bundesliga title. Historical data suggests that every Ballon d'Or winner in the past decade has lifted at least one trophy in the year of the award.

The most recent precedent for a winner without a major team trophy dates to 2013, when Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid won the prize. Ronaldo scored 66 goals that season while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up and Portugal failed to advance past the World Cup playoffs. Mbappe has been nominated for the award nine times and placed third in 2023.
