Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is projected to be sidelined for several weeks due to a viral infection, according to club officials speaking on Saturday. The 40-year-old manager is currently receiving treatment in a hospital, where he is listed in stable condition. Medical examinations are ongoing to determine the specific nature of his illness, though the club has not yet established a precise timeline for his return.
Max Eberl, the club's director of sport, addressed reporters at a news conference held in Kompany's absence. Eberl emphasized that the team is prioritizing understanding the medical details before discussing recovery schedules. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We're not starting to put together any timeframes," Eberl stated. He noted that the absence will be measured in weeks rather than days, and the club intends to proceed calmly once the diagnosis is clear.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks, an English national, will assume tactical control for Sunday's Bundesliga fixture at Freiburg. Danks led the media briefing and confirmed that he spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday. "I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said. He added that the coaching staff would work as a unit to maintain the club's momentum during Kompany's recovery.
The club decided against seeking a postponement for the upcoming league match, a decision Eberl defended as a way to support the head coach. "That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover," Eberl said regarding a strong performance. A separate second-team match scheduled for Friday was postponed following Kompany's collapse on the training pitch.
Joshua Kimmich, the German national team captain, will also miss the game against Freiburg. Danks confirmed that Kimmich is on bereavement leave, which he has observed since Tuesday. This absence adds to the challenges facing the squad as they travel to face their rivals.
Kompany had returned to the touchline for Wednesday's home match against Arsenal, despite missing the pre-game press conference due to his illness. He later admitted to ignoring early symptoms of the virus. "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course, I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point, my body just said, 'Enough is enough!'", Kompany said.
The defending league champions enter Sunday's match holding the top position in the Bundesliga standings, leading Freiburg by one point. The team will next play in the Champions League on November 3, when they face Atletico Madrid in Spain.
