The death of a 36-year-old British woman in the Bahamas has left her family in crisis after a strong ocean current separated her from her children. The incident occurred on Tuesday near the southern point of North Bimini. She was in the water with her husband and their two sons when the current intensified. The force of the water quickly pulled both boys away from the group. As she moved to intercept them, the current caught her as well. Her two sons were later pulled from the water and rescued.
Police officers at the Alice Town station received a call shortly after 10:00 a.m. local time. The report indicated that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. Officers rushed to the scene to assess the situation. By the time they arrived, the woman had already been transported to a local clinic for medical treatment. She had been pulled from the water and brought to the dock, where bystanders attempted CPR before her transfer. A local doctor pronounced her dead at the clinic despite ongoing resuscitation efforts.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force released a statement on social media to outline the preliminary findings. The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. The investigation remains open as authorities review the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is aware of the case. A spokesperson issued a brief statement expressing sympathy for the family. The office said it is in contact with local authorities and providing support to the woman’s relatives. The department has not released the name of the deceased or her husband.
North Bimini is part of a small island group situated between Andros and Miami. It serves as the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland. The islands are known for their connection to Ernest Hemingway and host a major shark research center. The area attracts many tourists for its clear waters and marine life.
The woman’s husband and two sons were not seriously injured in the incident. They were accounted for after the current subsided. The family is currently in the care of local officials while the investigation proceeds.
