A British woman died in Bimini on Tuesday after a strong current swept her two sons away while the family snorkeled near the island's southern point, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. The woman, 36 and believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was carried off as she reached for the children. The boys were later pulled from the water.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said its officers opened an investigation into the sudden death. Shortly after 10am, staff at the Alice Town police station received word that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Officers responded and learned she had already been transported to the local clinic, where a doctor pronounced her dead despite efforts to save her life.
Police said the woman was rescued from the water after being swept away and taken to the ferry dock, where CPR was administered. The force said foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
The family had been snorkelling with the woman's husband and their two sons near the island's southern point when the current took the children. A Foreign Office spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with the family of a British woman who has died in the Bahamas." The spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to her family.
