BYD Targets Luxury Market With New Flagship

BYD is challenging the dominance of traditional luxury houses by preparing to unveil its most expensive electric sedan outside of China. The company has confirmed that the global launch of this new flagship model will take place in the United Arab Emirates, a strategic choice that highlights its ambition to capture high-end international markets. This move represents a stark contrast to the brand’s historical identity, which is firmly rooted in producing affordable vehicles for mass consumption.
Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing disclosed the location of the debut this week, though a specific date has not yet been announced. The new vehicle is designed to compete directly with established ultra-luxury marques such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Mercedes-Maybach. For a company best known for the Seagull, a compact hatchback that retails for under $10,000 in China, this entry into the premium sector is a notable leap in scale and positioning.
The sedan is expected to be the largest and most opulent electric car in BYD’s current lineup. Visuals released last month show the vehicle undergoing tests while partially disguised. Despite the camouflage, the car’s silhouette closely resembles the Rolls-Royce Phantom or the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Local reports estimate the vehicle's length at approximately 5,500 millimeters, or about 216 inches, reinforcing its status as a full-size executive sedan.
Zheng Yu, the executive general manager of Yangwang, described the model as featuring "unprecedented disruptive technology," although he provided few concrete details. The vehicle is built to showcase the latest engineering from the sub-brand, which sits at the top of BYD’s hierarchy. This tier is reserved for demonstrating advanced technologies before they trickle down to other product lines, a strategy that has defined the brand's recent expansion.
Several technical inferences can be drawn from available evidence. The sedan was photographed at a BYD Flash Charging station, suggesting it supports megawatt-level charging speeds. It also features rear-hinged coach doors, a design element previously unseen in BYD models. Additionally, the car is reportedly the first to utilize the company’s solid-state battery technology. Executive vice president Stella Li previously stated that BYD’s first solid-state vehicle would debut in 2027, which aligns with the expected timeline for this model.
BYD has significantly broadened its portfolio in recent years, moving beyond entry-level EVs to include three-row SUVs, pickup trucks, and electric supercars. The corporate structure now includes the Denza, FangChengBao, and Yangwang sub-brands, alongside the Dynasty and Ocean families. Yangwang models have previously utilized the quad-motor e4 platform, which generates 1,300 horsepower, along with the DiSus-X intelligent body control system that allows vehicles to perform complex maneuvers such as jumping or driving on three wheels.
The new sedan is expected to make its official debut within the current month. Rumored pricing places the entry point at 2 million yuan, roughly equivalent to $300,000. This price tag would position the vehicle well above BYD’s current highest-priced offerings, signaling a serious intent to compete for buyers who prioritize exclusivity and status over value.
This new model will sit above the existing Yangwang lineup, which includes the U7 electric sedan starting at 658,000 yuan, or $98,000. The brand also offers the U8 and U8L plug-in hybrid luxury off-road SUVs and the U9 electric super-coupe. The extended U8L is currently the brand’s most expensive mass-produced vehicle, with a starting price of 1.45 million yuan, or $217,000. The introduction of the new sedan aims to close the gap between these models and the ultra-luxury segment dominated by European competitors.
