More than 224,000 people follow Cecilia Chavez on Facebook, a digital audience she has turned into a rapid response network for local emergencies. The group, known as 210 La Chismosa, recently coordinated aid for flood victims on the city's Southwest Side.
Chavez, who describes herself as an unofficial queen of gossip in San Antonio, launched the platform during the COVID-19 pandemic. She uploaded a Zoom recording of a casual conversation between herself, her mother, and her aunt. The video gained traction quickly, transforming a private family moment into a large-scale community hub.
Managing the group requires constant attention, Chavez told Ernie Zuniga on his digital talk show, Pickup Lines. She stated that the work consumes her entire day, noting that she wakes up to the responsibilities and goes to sleep to them.
Chavez grew up on the South and West sides of San Antonio. Her early life included a bout of measles that resulted in hearing loss in one ear. Her family later moved to a Native American reservation in Nevada to resolve a dispute regarding her son's high school football eligibility. The move allowed her sons to continue playing, with one eventually securing a scholarship.
Personal loss has driven Chavez's recent focus. Her son Jose died in a motorcycle crash in 2024. She credits the online community with providing her a renewed sense of purpose after his death. She described the platform as filling a void and allowing her to be present for others in need.
The group's recent efforts focused on supporting residents affected by floods in the Southwest Side. Chavez maintains that her primary goal is to share information and raise awareness rather than chase commercial success. She has declined sponsorship offers to preserve her independence.
Chavez plans to open a community resource center in the future. For now, she continues to use the 224,000-member group to distribute details and connect neighbors with necessary assistance.
