The Boston region has compiled a dense calendar of autumn activities for the week spanning October 26 to November 1. The schedule favors free community gatherings over ticketed spectacles, placing public squares and local parks at the center of the holiday observance.

East Boston anchors the early week with a traditional haunted house experience on Moore Street. This installation marks its fourth consecutive year of operation, featuring animatronics, fog effects, and giant spiders for daily viewing. On Halloween night, the site expands into a live-actor walk-through recommended for teenagers and adults. The location remains open from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. without an entry fee.

Chelsea Square hosts a continuous series of outdoor movie screenings on a nine-by-16-foot LED screen. The program runs from Tuesday through Friday, presenting Minions & Monsters, Coco, and Hocus Pocus. These family-oriented functions are free and serve as the closing events for the local Autumn in the Square season. Attendees are advised to bring blankets or chairs for the evening sessions.

Adults have limited paid options that distinguish them from the surrounding free events. The Boston Children’s Museum hosts an after-hours party for patrons over 21, with tickets starting at $30 plus fees. The Institute of Contemporary Art offers a Halloween event featuring magic tricks and tarot readings, charging $125 for members and $150 for non-members. Both venues require attendees to be over 21 years old.

Community engagement drives the activities in Somerville and the West End. The West End House of the Boys and Girls Club hosts a Trunk or Treat event where the haunted house costs a minimum of $5, while the main gathering is free. In Somerville, Chuckie Harris Park holds a pet-friendly block party on Halloween afternoon. These events emphasize local participation and volunteer involvement in distributing treats.

The week concludes with a Day of the Dead celebration at Bow Market in Somerville on November 1. Organized by Amantolli and Taquisimo, the event runs from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and invites residents to contribute photos or objects to a communal ofrenda. The gathering includes traditional Mexican food, local vendors, and music in a free admission setting.

Public libraries and civic spaces provide alternative indoor venues. The Central Square Branch Library in Cambridge screens the film Sinners for adults on October 29, providing popcorn and a social setting. Meanwhile, the mezzanine gallery at Boston City Hall hosts an immersive sound experience by artists Brandon Breaux and Marlene Boyette. This event, part of the Self-Mastery exhibition, focuses on relaxation and wellness without an entry charge.

A free pumpkin walk begins at the Boston Public Market on Halloween morning and continues along The Greenway. Participants can enjoy face painting, crafts, and live entertainment at the market. Those wearing costumes receive complimentary rides on the Greenway Carousel during the three-hour window from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
